A Letter About "Fairness" To The Whitehouse

Dear Mr. President,

I am an ardent listener of talk radio. I am a staunch believer in our Constitution, especially in the rights that are laid out in the Bill of Rights.

I am writing, today, about my concern surrounding talk of your possible plans to reenact the "Fairness Doctrine." Whether it is by simply pushing legislation to bring it back into law or by selecting a "favorable" person to head up the FCC, it is improper. It is my firm belief that, as the President of the United States, sworn to uphold the Constitution of these very United States, you cannot propose ANY legislation that would put any restriction or regulation on what's "fair" and what's "balanced" about radio or broadcasting in any format. The very basis of the premise goes completely against the First Amendment of the Constitution. School children know that much (at least the ones in schools that aren't failing due to inept governmental mismanagement of our public education system).

It is my opinion, that talk radio (or any media outlet) will survive if it has content that some audience somewhere will enjoy. If the content of the broadcast appeals to nobody, it will fail. It's a natural system. Certain politicians (Debbie Stabenow, Nancy Pelosi, etc.) are unhappy that talk radio is not "fair" because shows that they themselves would prefer to listen to do not survive. That does not constitute in any way a reason to push legislation to "balance" opinions or content that is being broadcast. If a radio show's content is completely unappealing or simply does not have an audience, it will fail. If a radio show's content is intriguing and pertinent and it has a large audience, it will thrive. Whether or not the content it favorable to certain politicians or even the government in general is completely irrelevant. Even on the surface the notion sounds completely absurd, if not far beyond reason.

I is my hope that you will consider heavily the reasoning and legality behind any such "fairness" legislation as it pertains to broadcasting or media. It is arguably unconstitutional. The Constitution protects the citizens and media such that they may speak out against the government, if they so choose. Hillary Clinton has spoken out many times about dissent being patriotic. It's part of the greatness of this country. People must be able to speak up. There is nothing that Congress, certain politicians, or even you, President Obama, can do to quiet people who wish to speak out against you.

I, myself, wish you all the success in the world, because you are the President of my country. I love my country. I do not agree with many of your ideals or policies, but you are still my President, and I respect the Office. But, I must write this to let you know that what we are hearing in the press is that you may be willing to make an unconstitutional move to silence talk radio that might be unfavorable to your administration. It is not a good or proper situation and, as President, you must uphold the Constitution.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
